Master of Industrial Design – Exchange

Exchange to GT-Atlanta for MID Program

Master of Industrial Design (MID) degree program consists of two years of study: A minimum of 48 credit hours for degree completion. MID students have the option of completing the entire program at GT-Shenzhen or exchanging to GT-Atlanta in the last one or two semesters (with good academic outcomes). Students who complete the entire Georgia Tech degree program in Shenzhen may participate in the graduation ceremony in Atlanta if they secure a proper U.S. visa (such as a tourist visa).

Students interested in the exchange to GT-Atlanta must be in good academic (minimum GPA of 3.5 out of 4.0) and disciplinary standing. GT-Shenzhen will perform multiple checks of this status before the exchange.

GT-Shenzhen MID students have the following options if pursuing an exchange to GT-Atlanta:

    1. Exchange to GT-Atlanta for one academic semester. Complete 36-42 credit hours during the first three academic semesters at GT-Shenzhen and study at GT-Atlanta during the last spring semester.
    2. Exchange to GT-Atlanta for two academic semesters. Complete 24-28 credit hours during the first two academic semesters at GT-Shenzhen and study at GT-Atlanta during the last fall & spring semesters.

Note:

  • At the time of the exchange request, the earned credit hours and the GPA as shown on the transcript must meet the exchange requirements.

To apply for the exchange, the MID student should email gtshenzhen@nulldesign.gatech.edu before the following deadlines with the information: a resume, a portfolio, and a completed MID exchange application form

Fall Exchange May 1
Spring Exchange August 12

Exchange students travel to Atlanta on F-1 student visa and pay the applicable Atlanta campus tuition and fees. Their I-20 document must reflect the intended duration of stay and financial resources required. F-1 visa holders must maintain full-time student registration of 12 credit hours or more during the academic semester(s) in Atlanta. Students sponsored by a foreign government or institution may only travel to the U.S. on J-1 visa. See the GT Office of International Education (OIE) for more details. On-campus dormitory space is generally not available to exchange students during the fall or spring semester.

Note that while GT-Shenzhen students may exchange to GT-Atlanta, the decision to grant the U.S. visa or not resides with the visa officer.

Students with F-1 visa may arrive in the U.S. 30 days before the start of the semester and may remain in the U.S. for 60 days following the completion of the degree program.
