Insurance

  • Study Abroad Insurance Policy.  All program faculty and non-Chinese citizen students participating as part of the Georgia Tech academic program in Shenzhen are eligible for the supplemental medical, evacuation, and repatriation insurance offered through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI). Please review carefully the 2023-24 policy brochure. Pay particular attention to the exclusions and pre-existing condition clauses in the policy brochure. If you have a second insurance policy, what CISI does not cover may be covered through your second insurance policy. See the CISI FAQ handout for further information.
  • This short-term policy is mandatory for non-Chinese citizen students on the program. Chinese citizen students should arrange to purchase their own insurance policy in China.
  • Cost. The insurance premium is $1.36 per day. Policies will be issued from your departure date through the expected start date of your Shenzhen insurance (information provided by GTSI).
  • Billing. For non-Chinese citizen students, the CISI insurance premium will be added to your student account prior to the start of each semester and must be paid in full when you remit tuition and fees to Georgia Tech.
  • GT-Shenzhen office makes insurance order for the instructor according to the airline itinerary that is provided.
  • Faculty will have the opportunity to purchase the same insurance for their dependents. Please use the CISI Faculty Dependent Form.
  • Students will NOT have the opportunity to purchase this insurance for their dependents – spouse and children of GT-Shenzhen students will have to purchase their own insurance policy.
  • As soon as you have purchased airfare to China, please email your airline itinerary to GT-Shenzhen for insurance purposes.
  • Insurance Card. Soon after we enroll you in the insurance, you will receive an email from CISI including the participant ID card, the consulate letter (if one is required for applying for visa to China), the policy brochure, and the claim form in case you need to file a claim.
  • Hospitalization. If you are hospitalized in China, contact the GT-Shenzhen office and CISI as soon as possible. The GT-Shenzhen office will try to have CISI pay the hospital directly to minimize your out of pocket expense (assuming it is an injury or a covered illness). If the hospital does not accept the payment guarantee letter from CISI, you may have to pay out of pocket first and file for reimbursement later.
  • Most of the time (with the possible exception of hospital stay), the patient will have to pay medical expenses out of pocket first and file for reimbursement later with the insurance.
  • Receipts. If you incur medical costs, save all receipts. The receipts will need to be translated into English before submission to the insurance company. Our GT-Shenzhen office can assist you with the task.
